Strathmore People
I've lived in Strathmore for the last 11 years or thereabouts. It's always had a bit of stigma about it. When you mention to someone you live in Strathmore their facial expressions can sometimes do funny things.
It's gotta be one of the most socially and economically diverse suburbs in New Zealand. At its fringes are multi-million dollar mansions, and in the middle is a mixture of social housing and rapidly modernising homes. At my kids' local school there are something like 35 nationalities over a population of 170. From Afghanistan to Iraq, Namibia to Niuean, Maori and Pakeha. It's a melting pot of people, many of whom I've come to know and enjoy friendships with.
People will always say hello to you in Strathmore. Doesn't happen in many places anymore.
Strathmore People is destined to become a book, and the current photos here are a selection of people I met along the way. Some for minutes, others for hours.
